Drugs and Sam

Share

When I first moved to the city I made friends with with a girl named Laina, she was my lab partner for science and we shared several together classes together. We both liked the same kind of music and shopped at the same stores. We were instant friends. One Friday in science she told me that tomorrow she and a few of her friends who went to a different school in the city were going to be hanging out and I should come along. I agreed excited to meet her other friends.

On Saturday morning I took the bus to Laina’s apartment she was waiting outside and we took another bus to the park to meet her friends. We got there and they were skateboarding around the park annoying people acting loud and obnoxious. We walked up and Laina introduced me to her friends, there were three boys and a girl but one of the boys caught my eye in particular. He had long black hair that fell into his face and snakebites in his lip. He was the shortest of the boys there and skinny but I saw the six-pack abs hard as a rock through his open flannel shirt. Laina informed me his name was Sam when she had introduced me.

“I thought we were actually going to have some fun?” Laina complained.
“We’re still waiting on Derek, he was supposed to bring the stuff.” One of the boys, Tyler, replied. Laina sighed and we walked over to the bench where Sam was lounging. “Hey.” He said giving her a hug and offering the cigarette in his hand. She took a drag off it and offered it to me. I’d never smoked before but I took a drag anyways not wanting to seem like a good-girl. My mouth and throat burned and the smoke I inhaled made me cough. I handed the cigarette back to Sam suddenly realizing Laina had walked away. “You don’t smoke do you?” He asked. I just shook my head feeling suddenly awkward just standing there so I sat down on the ledge next to him. He laughed when I shook my head and offered me a sip of the coke on the other side of him. “Burns don’t it.” He laughed. I frowned “It’s not that funny.” I replied but he just smiled. A shaggy headed kid with a backpack had walked up and was talking to Laina and her other friends. Sam got up and offered me his hand to help me up as well.

We all walked to the L-train entrance and got on taking us further back into the city. We arrived at our stop and walked a few blocks to our destination. Laina walked next to me and asked “So what do ya think?” Looking ahead toward Sam and then back to me. “He seems nice,” I paused, “and hot.” We both giggled. We reached an old abandoned building and walked down the alley next to it to the back entrance. The lock had been cut and the Derek, the shaggy haired boy, pulled the rusted old door open. I followed the rest of the group into the old building. We moved back through the dark and dank old building to and area lit by the sunshine pouring in from the hole in the ceiling to the floor above it.

We sat in a circle, Sam was on my left and Laina on my right. Derek pulled Bacardi and a paper bag out of his back pack and began passing them around the Bacardi first and then the paper bag. I watched as the others to large gulps of the alcohol and I did the same when it came to me. My entire mouth was engulfed in flames 10 times worse then the cigarette I nearly choked as the flaming liquid slid down my throat and it tasted absolutely awful. They passed the bag around and I watched as well as they picked up colorful little squares putting them on their tongues. When the bag got to me I saw the little squares but before I could put my hand even into the bag to literally pick my poison Sam pulled the bag out of my reach and passed it in the continued pattern around the circle. I looked up at him surprised. “It’s for your own good.” He whispered. Next a new item was passed to me, I knew what it was this time, a joint. Despite my last encounter with Sam’s cigarette I took a long drag I choked again blowing out the smoke after a few seconds. This didn’t taste like Sam’s cigarette, it was different in a way I couldn’t explain. I passed it on to Sam.

The circle continued and I got several move gulps of Bacardi and drags off the joint before I felt sick. I was pale and sweaty and shaking. Sam placed his hand on my thigh.  “Are you okay?” He asked but I couldn’t even speak I felt weird and dizzy. I didn’t realize him talk to Tyler who was next to him, I was in a total daze. He stood up and then helped me up guiding me toward the door I could barely stand so he was supporting my weight as I leaned against him. He opened the door and we moved out into the semi-sunlit alley. I don’t know how he managed to do it but somehow he managed to get both of us onto the L-Train. We rode for what seem like hours in my head. By the time we got off I felt nauseous. We walked for about a block to Sam’s apartment building and when we got upstairs he showed me the bathroom. I puked and he held my hair back for me, he told me later I had puked for nearly five minutes. Afterwards I don’t remember what happened.

I woke up early the next morning on Sam’s bed. I felt dazed, where was I, how did I get here. After a minute I remember the building and the drug and alcohol and Sam. My head was pounding and my throat was sore from puking the night before. Sam later informed me that I had puked three more times during the night. I wandered from his room down the hall. Sam was sleeping on the couch in the Living Room. He looked so beautiful sleeping there, but after a minute he woke up and noticed me. “Feeling any better?” He yawned. “I dunno.” I responded realizing how hoarse my voice actually sounded. He got up moving to the kitchen after pulling a shirt over his head. He offered me a Gatorade or coffee, I accepted the Gatorade to ease my sore throat. He came back with two Garotades motioning me to the couch and handing me one.

“What time is it?” I asked rubbing my watery eyes.
“Sevenish.” He answered. “Crap what about your parents?” He asked concerned.
“It’s fine.” I reassured him. “My mom’s on her honeymoon with her new husband.”
“Okay.” He nodded.
“What about yours?” I asked
“It’s just my dad, and he’s in Vegas.” He responded. It was quiet for a moment.
“Thank you.” I broke the silence.
“No problem,” He smiled “Laina didn’t mention you were a first-timer.”
“Who says I was?” I asked pretending to be offended.
We both laughed and drank our Gatorades.
