Kissing with Braces - Works Fine

Share

There was a boy down the road named Chris that I used to hang out with every day, and circumstances came about that led us to be together nearly every day, which led to some further predictable developments in both of our lives.

We both came from single parent homes - his mother was a registered nurse and worked odd hours, and always tried to pick up extra shifts for extra money. My dad worked offshore three on, one off so he was gone a lot, and also did cash in hand work when he was at home between hitches.

Naturally, this led me and Chris to spend a lot of time together. We went to different schools (mine was an all girls school, his was the public school down the road), but we'd often end up staying at each other's houses when the other's parent was working, and also just to hang out. We talked, slept over each other's houses, and lost entirely too much time to Mario Kart.

From going to an all girls school for most of my life, my exposure to boys was pretty restricted, and I was always sort of bumbling around them and not being able to think of anything to say. This wasn't the way it was with Chris, we could talk about anything and everything. He was more at ease with girls but was naturally quite shy.

One of the frequent topics of conversation between us was the usual gossipy stuff - which girl had been seen making out with which guy sort of stuff. We talked about this sort of thing a lot, I remember asking him if there were any girls he liked and he awkwardly mentioned one or two, which hurt me more than I realised when I wasn't one of them, but I suppose it made sense given our relationship was closer to siblings than anything else.

I remember one time we were at the local park sitting at some picnic tables. His mum had kicked us out of the house so she could clean up and have some "me" time, so we went. It was getting close to winter and the weather was getting colder so the park was deserted. We were both pretty rugged up and ended up scooting closer together, and he finally undid this huge old jacket he used to wear and put it around the both of us and we snuggled up. After a few minutes the conversation got decidedly odd - I asked him if he'd ever kissed a girl.

"No...I haven't" he replied, then added "have you ever, um kissed a guy?"
"No."

I also asked him a question I'd been dreading - specifically if he'd ever heard of anyone kissing someone with braces. There'd been a lot of crap going around school that if you had braces no one would want to kiss you as they could cut the other person, and if two people with braces kissed they could somehow be locked together. In retrospect I know now it was just nonsense, but back then I was seriously concerned about it. But, I also desperately wanted to be kissed, and there seemed to be know time like the present, so I stammered out "D-do you want to um, kiss me?"

He nodded, and we both moved in closer. There were several abortive attempts - we had our eyes closed so we bumped noses a few times, but eventually we got to that natural angle that just works, and kissed very softly a few times. I hadn't experienced anything better up to that point, and he gave no indication that he had either. After a minute or two we both broke off and looked at each other, he was sort of looking over my shoulder, and then he looked right at me and blushed a deep shade of red. "Can we do that again?"

I nodded and we kissed, and kissed again. Eventually we were very slowly frenching, one of his hands on my waist and one of them holding my cheek on the left. I remember the feel of the glove against my face clearly. My arms were circled around his neck, and we were both holding onto each other very tightly.

After what seemed like hours we stopped. We were both freezing cold but oddly warm at the same time. I don't think either of us knew what to say, but we both seemed to know that we'd moved a lot closer. Finally he broke the silence with that grin he always had, able to make a joke about anything. "Well, at least there's one thing we know."

"What's that?"
"That if you kiss someone with braces, nothing bad happens."

I hugged him furiously, and we walked back to his mum's house. The strange thing was we were holding hands but I don't thing either of us realised it, more of an automatic action. She gave us a smile, and told us matter of factly that she'd been cleaning up all day, couldn't be bothered making dinner so we could order pizza. It was a perfect end to a perfect day in my life, made more so because it finally allowed me and Chris to explore this new dimension to our relationship, emotionally and physically, but that's for another story...
