Stealing from work

Share

So My life was going alright. I had left college and was working twords becoming a firefighter. I just moved in with my on again/off again girlfriend, rented an apartment, ect. But things can always go better. I was very jealous of my friend who always had so much money. We both worked together at the grocery store, and made the same amount, yet somehow he always had more. Maybe it was because he lived at home, maybe because he didnt smoke, I dont know. But I always was working on trying to beat him, or at least tie him. So I decided that the best thing to do was to steal money. I mean, it was a victimless crime, I made out good, and a big no faced company lost a few bucks. Win win right? Maybe not so much....

I worked in the customer service desk and we handled all the refunds. Now, the way this worked was the coustomer would return something, we would scan it, and hand them back the money. If it was under 9.99 it didnt require any paperwork. Anything over 10.00 required the customer fill out their information. At night, we were the managers, and all alone in the desk. At this time, the security cameras were not working.

I decided to take a little from the till. Throughout the night I would ring up 5.00 here, 9.99 there, and a few bucks everywhere. Over the course of the night, it would add up and I would pocket 40 bucks. I would go home and hide it in an old wallet in my underware drawer, taking the money only when I needed it.

Well it started out with 20 here and 40 there. But what always happens? I got greedy. I started taking 50's, 100's, and more. Little did I know that security had been sneaking in at night to install a secondary security system because of the amount of refunds being processed.

I walked into work one morning and noticed the head of security and the manager were waiting by the time clock. I said hi and they asked me to come into the office. I didn't knwo what they possibly could wantg with me, after all, I was careful not to let the cameras see me. Not to mention the fact that the cameras were out of service! I did and they told me they knew I was stealing. I played hard until they said they had video and I caved. I admitted to stealing. Overall I stole around 3000 from them in cash alone (along with probably another 5000 in merch over 6 years) but all they knew about was 300 dollars of which I had to pay back. I was devistated. I mean, how did I get cought? My girlfriend just moved up here and didnt have a job. We were going to be broke, totally destitute.

So I was fired. On the same day my girlfriend found a job. The worst part was telling my mother, who worked at that store for the last 35 years. It was awful. Leaving that day I sat in my car for a good 30 minutes. I couldn't believe it. I was a piece of shit, worthless.... To make matters worse, they told my friend that I was using his sign in code to steal the money in an attempt to make it look like he was the one stealing. This couldnt be furthur from the truth. Nevertheless, a friendship that made us closer than brothers was squashed in an instant. We are no longer friends. That hurt horribly! Since than, I have not taken so much as a paperclip from a job, but I still think of how dumb I was taking so much, and I probably could still be taking had I not gotten greedy.

Thanks for reading.....
