When I was 14, my friends and I thought we were untouchable and that we could get away with anything. My two best friends and I went to different high schools, which was perfect for skipping school because nobody would get suspicious. I had my first cigarette with my two best mates, Tanya and Julia. The three of us did just about everything together.

We didn't skip school often but were bored towards the end of term and wanted the vacation to just hurry the fuck up so we decided to take an early vacation ourselves and skipped the last day of term. We met up and went to a shopping center that was out of the way to guarantee not running into anyone we knew. We proceeded to do what we normally do and that is shoplifting. The morning was fruitful, between us we stole about $300 worth of make-up and a few clothes.

I wasn't really into it that day but Tan and Jules were getting reckless. After a couple of hours, we went to a knick knack store for odds and ends. I really wasn't into it by that stage but joined the girls. I walked around a bit and hadn't realised that Jules had opened my bag and thrown a few things in there. I was walking around with an open bag! Captain Obvious! When I realised, I made a beeline for the exit and left the store with Jules not too far behind me. A few minutes later, we realised that Tan was still in the store. A sales assistant was speaking to her. Stupidly, Jules and I went back to find out what was going on. BUSTED. They had already called the police on us and held us at the store until the police turned up.

What happened next was not a lot of fun and we ended up with a bond, which is a bit less than a record and was to be wiped off our permanent records in 5 years. At the police station we were separated into different rooms, and our mobiles didn't work. We couldn't possibly contact each other, which sucked. I took full responsibility for my role in our little shoplifting adventure. We were, after all, typical bored teens going through our rebellious stage.

The one thing I didn't realise was that we got caught because Jules had opened up MY bag in the store and I hadn't intended on stealing anything from the store. FUCK. Afterwards, I realised I didn't need to take any responsibility. We weren't busted for shoplifting in the other stores. Why should I have taken the fall here? Everything that happened at the police station was really hazy, mainly because I was freaking out about what my parents would do and say. Obviously, they weren't very happy. I did push boundaries a lot as a kid (wagging school on a number of occassions, getting caught smoking at school, me becoming interested in the opposite sex, late nights and a lack of interest in school and that occassion I went to the authorities accusing my Mum of assaulting me...) and once I realised that Jules was the one who got me in to trouble, I didn't speak to her for a year. The three of us got banned from speaking to/hanging out with each other but that didn't last long. Tan and I had grown up together and her Mum adored me and thought I as a good influence on Tan. She viewed the whole shoplifting debacle as an "unfortunate incident", which suited me fine but the two of us did continue to get in to a bit of trouble as we got older.

Five years later, Jules and I swiped a packet of noodles from the local Asian grocery store to celebrate the bond being removed from our records. I promise we did learn our lessons though!
