All part of being emotionally stunted

Share

At 16 I started dating what was to become my first serious girlfriend. We spent a lot of time hanging out, going to the movies, and walking around the mall before we really acknowledged that we were interested in each other. Once we did this, things started moving pretty fast. Since we were both new to dating, we shared a lot of firsts. We were each others first everything really, from kissing all the way to sex.

We were together for 1 year and 9 months when she had to move to Washington for college. The plan was that she would move there at the start of summer and I would move down at the beginning of the school year. We were both in love with each other and had been planning on going to college together for several months. Our plans, however, didn’t quite work out.

While she was in Washington, I was hanging out with friends back in Montana. One of these friends happened to be a pretty hot girl that had a thing for me. Eventually, we started dating. We really didn’t do anything more than kiss, but it made me realize that I had only been with one person and there was still so much out there to explore. Although I talked with my girlfriend in Washington, I never did mention the other girl.

Finally, it was time for me to move to Washington for school. Within the span of 2 days, I went from having never broken up with a girl to breaking up with two. The girl in Montana was okay with it because she knew I was going to leave and we hadn’t been dating long enough for it to get serious.

The girl in Washington was crushed. She had been waiting for me for a few months and, while she knew something wasn’t quite right, she wasn’t expecting to get dumped. For me, this was when I realized I was not overly encumbered by emotions. I had known for months that I would break up with my girlfriend, and I had often wondered how it would go. I had assumed I would be upset at hurting somebody so close to me (and who I still cared for), but the truth was I felt completely emotionless. It was like all the feelings I had just evaporated or, worse, were just a figment of my imagination.

In any case, that was my first breakup. About 2 years later, I would get my turn to experience the breakup from the other perspective, but that is another story altogether.
