Happy Valentine

Share

My mom paid for me to sign up with this national dating service just after I graduated from college. I think she was losing faith in me and thought I would never get married. I wrote a few of the contacts and had a few dates but nothing really happened. I had written the whole thing off as one of many failed attempts at getting hitched when I got the call.

On February 14, 1995 I received a call from a young women wishing me a Happy Valentine's Day. She was in Queens, New York and I was in Portland, Oregon. She had received my information through the dating service but had almost given up connecting with anyone because of the "bad experiences" she had on previous attempts. It turns out a friend had bet her she wouldn't call one of her dating service contacts out of the blue on Valentine's Day and with them a Happy Valentines. She thought about it and finally got up the nerve to throw caution to the wind and call. It turns out she chose my name to call. I'll never forget that frosty winter day in Portland when I found myself talking to a girl on the other side of the country. I was a little shocked because when signing up for the dating services I had expressed a desire to only date within the Pacific Northwest. Imagine my surprise to be talking to a women from the east coast.

We started talking everyday on the phone and corresponding by mail as well. Sometimes my phone bill would be six hundered dollars. I didn't know what email was back then. We sent photographs to each other and later videos. Then came the day I flew to New York to see her for the first time. We had our first date on a dinner yahte cruising around Manhatten Island in front of the Statue of Liberty. I was smitten. She visited my side of the world after that and I introduced her to mom. Later that year I asked her to marry me on my knees in a horse drawn carriage during a driving rain storm in central park. She said, "Yes". On February 4, 1996 we were wed in a small church in Long Island. This is one guy who is very happy she took that wild and crazy bet.
