Complications

I laughed as I chased my best friend Kelly down the halls of the school, hoping a teacher wouldn't stop us. There was a "no running in the halls" policy at my school, but it was after hours and not many teachers were around.

I loved my school in the afternoons, just walking through it, exploring it, was so fun. Kelly and I stopped, panting, at the end of the hallway. I dashed over to a water fountain, slurping up the refreshing, cool water.

Kelly tapped me on the shoulder. "Are you and Ben still going out?" I sighed. Ben and I had been going out for months now, and though I was 17 I had never been in a real relationship before. Sure, I went to the mall with guys, but there were never any sparks until now. Ben took it really slow with me, like a boyfriend in "tutorial" mode. He was great - but I was madly in love with his best friend, Tim. Ben was gorgeous, with his blonde hair and dark brown eyes. And he was sweet, he always called me and kissed me goodnight even in public.

But Tim was amazing. I used to hang out with him and Ben before we paired off, and my friends always thought we would end up together. He was definately my type; he had dark hair, green eyes, and he loved the exact same things as I did.

Yesterday we were paired up in science class to work on a project, and I knew I couldn't stay with Ben. Tim was the one for me, and it would hurt Ben even more to find out from some gossiping girl that I was going to dump him.

"Kelly...I think I need to dump him." Kelly gave me a sympathetic hug, and walked with me to the car. The way to her house was silent; she could sense that I was nervous. I dropped her off, then parked my car at the side of the road a few houses down to take out my cell phone. Sooner or later I had to do this, and I decided on sooner.

"Hey, Ally," Ben said into the phone when he answered. I breathed in deeply...

"Ben...This isn't going to work. I...Think we need to break up." There was silence.

"Is it Tim?" I froze. What did he know?

"M-maybe..."

"Ally, how could you do this? I thought we were..."

I had to choke back tears. "Ben, please don't do this. I can't keep dating you when my whole heart's not in it."

Silence. Then: "He'd better not hurt you..."

"Does this mean you're OK with it?"

"I wish I wasn't, Ally, but I am. He really likes you-" -my heart skipped a beat when I heard that- "-so I guess I'm happy for you guys."

"Alright, well, goodnight, Ben. Thanks for being so cool about this."

"Goodnight. Oh...Do you want Tim's number?"
