The Pro's

When I was 13 my family moved into a new subdivision. There were only about half the houses built at the time, so the kids in the neighborhood got to see a lot of the construction going on. My cousin lived down the street from me and he was one year younger than I was. Like most adolescents with time on their hands we were always looking for things to do.

One weekend day we were in the back of the subdivision, deep in the woods and no one else was around so we decided to go into one of the new houses under construction and mess around. The house we entered had just been framed and only had the wall sheeting on the outside walls. We hung out for hours, in what we thought was the coolest fort of all time. After awhile we became bored and one thing led to another and we began throwing blocks of wood and other construction debris through the "fiber board" sheeting. Whatever we threw made the same shaped hole through the board. This was great fun and we laughed our asses off. We continued this until we were too tired to throw anything else. Looking at the house you would have thought of a piece of swiss cheese. We went home.

The next day, the workers were back and extremely pissed off that they were going to have to replace all of the sheeting. Since we hung around with the workers sometimes, they never suspected we were the vandals. They asked us if we had seen anyone hanging around and we, of course, said we had not. A worker later told me that whoever had done this had caused $1000 in damage and if they found out who did it, they were going to press charges. Luckily, for us, we were never caught for that incident of vandalism.

Not because of that incident, the construction company went bankrupt. The company owners left everything in the model home and fled to Florida, afraid of prosecution for fraud in association with their home building techniques. My cousin and I found out the model home was unlocked and decided to check it out. Inside we found a keyboard with keys to every house in the neighborhood. This is when the real trouble began.

We had been talking about becoming professional cat burglars and this was our perfect opportunity to put our talents to test. We grabbed a handful of keys and started staking out the houses in the neighborhood and soon found one that we could enter easily in broad day light with out being seen. The thrill was incredible, being somewhere doing something we knew was wrong. What a rush!

We never took anything, but some sodas or beer and never caused any damage to the homes. We simply thought it was very cool to be able to hang out in these houses without being detected. This all changed when we found some hard liquor in one of the houses and decided to try it out. We had both drank booze before but never this much. Man we were wasted. We did some stupid things in that house, like break a bottle of booze on the garage floor, and not clean it up. And since we were drunk, we also did some petty vandalism to the inside of the house. That was our big mistake. We didn’t clean things up and left the house. When the homeowners returned they knew someone had been in their house and called the cops. I thought we were going to get away with because they had no clues to who had done it. Unfortunately, my cousin had kept the house key in his sock drawer and when his mom found the key we were busted. We had to go to the police station and get finger printed and pictures taken. I ended up spending 30 days in juvi-hall and being on probation most of my way through high school. This incident straightened me up and never did anything like this again.

The end.
