Carding

Share

Back when I was a lot younger (19), I was involved pretty heavily in the computer underground. Back then, the Internet was not yet commercialized. So instead of message boards on websites, we all communicated and traded files on Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs). These were systems set up by various people that you could call with your modem and then trade files and post messages and such.

There were a lot of illegal activities discussed on these BBSs: hacking, phreaking (exploiting the telephone system to make free calls; this is how we were able to "afford" to call long distance BBSs), and carding were the main ones.

Carding was what we called credit card fraud. You would get a credit card number, and then would order something you wanted with it, and thereby get said item for free. Hey, this is a story about crime! You didn't expect it to dicuss things that are legal, did you? :P

Normally, you would have the item(s) sent to a vacant house or apartment, and this was referred to as a "drop site". You didn't want to send the stuff to your own house because you would just get arrested once the fraud was discovered. Most people involved in the underground were younger: 13, 14, 15, 16, and such. So they, having limited mobility, would usually find a vacant house on their own street or a closeby street to use. Well I was 19 and had my own apartment and my own car. So I came up with a grand idea.

My mom's friend had a beach condo 120 miles from where I lived, and I had a key. No one was ever there except for maybe 2 or 3 weeks during the summer. So it was basically a vacant house... A perfect drop site!

I wanted me first carding adventure to be big. A friend and I wanted portable computers. "Notebooks" were a new concept back then; most people that even had portable computers had true "laptops" which were still rather heavy and unwieldy. Notebooks were new (there are no "laptops" anymore, everything now is really a notebook, heh). Well anyway, the latest and greatest notebook at the time was the TI Travelmate 2000. For the time, this was a very nice computer, and fully equipped with modem and extra RAM and a 40MB (yes, MB, not GB, this was 1990!) hard drive, you were talking $3,000!

So, from 2 separate mail order companies, I ordered the thing and had it sent to the drop site, which was the beach condo 120 miles away.

So, now, there was no UPS tracking online back then (remember, no commercial Internet), so I had to keep checking the condo for my notebooks. My first check, a week after I ordered, turned up nothing. 2 days after that, I went to check and, lo and behold, UPS actually left (!!!!) the first one on the porch. SCORE!

3 days after that, I checked again, and there was a UPS slip saying they left the second one at the condo complex's office. I went and got it, and SCORE, 2 $3,000 notebooks for free on my first carding attempt!

The funny thing is: when I got the second notebook, I was with my best friend, who I also lived with (along with his fiance -- she stayed at our apartment though). When we came home from picking up the computer, there were 3 police officers in our apartment!!!!!!!!!! You can imagine our total panic as we thought we were busted. Turns out they were there because the boyfriend of a friend of my friend's fiance had beat the hell out of her at our apartment and the police were there for that. Whew!
