Love Hurts

Share

I really don't know why I am telling this story but here goes. My girlfriend and I met our freshman year and instantly clicked. She walked into our freshman English class and it was love at first sight. I walked up to her after class and offered to carry her books for her. We started talking and things just went up from there. We went everywhere together. We were making our friends sick because they all said we were so lovey-dovey or whatever. So, I decided to plan something special for our 3 year aniversary. We had been having some problems recently and I wanted to talk about them and try to work things out. I really loved Julie(not her real name). I actually thought we would eventually get married.

So the big day came. I had planned to pick her up after her cheerleading practice and let her go home and get ready. I had told her mom what I was planning and she loved it. We would go out to dinner and then go on a boat ride through the park. Our park connected to a river and I thought this would be perfect. Little did I know she had been planning to break things off for almost a month. We had gotten into this big argument over college plans and how she thought we wouldn't last going to different schools. I said we could make it work because we really cared about each other. So I was going to tell her that night that I was going to go to a school about an hour from where she wanted to go.

We get in the car and she tells me she has something to tell me and I tell her to wait until dinner because I had some news for her. We get to the restaurant and I go ahead and tell her the news about college. She starts to cry and I ask her whats the matter. She looks me in the eyes and says she can't do this anymore. I say do what. And she starts to tell me how she had been wanting to break up for quite a while and that she jst couldn't bring herself to do it but that she didn't want to go off to college still with those feelings over her head. She told me that she did care for me but that she just didn't feel right keeping me from finding the girl of my dreams because she thought she wasn't worth my time. She said how great of a guy she thought I was but she didn't feel right about dating me.

Needless to say, we broke up that night. I was crushed...Devastated. We went off to college. I still went to the school I was going to and we remained close friends. I never could get past her though. So I told her that I still loved her and couldn't stop thinking of her. She said she felt the same way and was sorry for breaking my heart that night.
This was 7 years ago. My wife and I have been married for 6 and are about to have our 2nd baby. I write this to encourage anyone who has ever been in love and been heartbroken, the right one IS out there. Don't give up on love.
