Middle School Thieves

Share

This was back when I was in 8th grade.

We were just a bunch of idiot boys that didn't have anything better to do, and had too little brain power to understand what we were doing. Still, that doesn't justify our theft and what we did that school year.

For some reason, we had this idea that we should start stealing computer games and comic books from the local mall. I have no idea what we were thinking back then, perhaps its because there was just too many things we wanted, or perhaps the feeling of excitement from getting away with something wrong. I have no idea what it is, but I'm glad I'm over it.

Anyhow, my middle school had the week setup so that the students would have half days on Wednesday, and that were our days of crime. We would meet at a friends house and then set everything up. From getting our nerves settled to making sure the backpacks looked ready. I guess it was our little mission. Our little mission of idiocy.

We would head off to the mall in pairs, from there we would go to either the game store or the comic store. I usually went for the game store as I was into computer gaming more then comics though that didn't mean I never visited the comic store. As for the gaming store we would hang out in there for near an hour until we weren't noticed to much, and we would move the gaming boxes that we wanted to the back of the store in that hour. Usually one was the look out, while the other one would load up the games into their backpacks. Other times we would just load up our backpacks each with games, quickly. We would come in the store with empty backpacks and leave with games filled in them. I'm amazed we were never caught. I even went so far as to make a cardboard piece to fit inside my backpack to give the illusion that it was filled even though there was nothing inside. Such stupidity.

As for the comic store, we would just have one of us with our back towards a comic rack and have the other stuff handfuls of comics into the bag. I'm more then sure we were one of the reason for having the comic store close shop.

Sadly, people would witness that we would be stealing the comics but never said a word. I find it so strange that people would turn such a blind eye to these things.

I did that for nearly the whole year, every Wednesday, costing these business hundreds of dollars a week. Lost to ignorance and idiocy by a group of kids.

I haven't stolen a thing since then. I feel terrible for uprooting these businesses that were just trying to get by. I should have been smarter but I wasn't, and I hurt more people then I ever wanted to. Luckily I stopped at stealing and didn't carry my crime to other things.

All I want to say is, tell your kids, don't let them do stupid things like I have. Don't do stupid things yourself. You know what is right and what is wrong. There's no need for any of this. I wish I was smarter back then, it would have saved me a lot of grief.
